Why do French end up brown?

hands up all those who see 1940 french painted in brown greatcoats on wargames tables?

I see this shade of Green uniforms in French language magazines. But people paint them brown. Even the pictures I see in Ospreys have them in a brown indistinguishable from the british uniform colour.

But here is that uniform colour.....and it is not the same shade

no 4 commando a la francais....but the helmets are the same colour
